Collection: Christophe Domergue

Christophe Domergue, (b1975), operates from his Marrickville-based studio. Domergue's artistic journey commenced with an Advanced Diploma in Fine Art at Seaforth TAFE in 1994, laying a solid foundation for his future artistic pursuits. This commitment to learning led him to acquire a Diploma in Design at Enmore Design in 2003, further enriching his artistic repertoire.

In 2017, Christophe Domergue reached a significant milestone, obtaining a Master of Art from UNSW Cofa, showcasing not only his dedication to artistic excellence but also his academic rigor. Since then, he has consistently garnered recognition as a finalist in eleven art prizes, being highly commended in three. His distinctive artistic vision prompted renowned Australian artist Ben Quilty to remark, "I love the brutal surface," a testament to the profound impact of Domergue's work.

In 2023, Domergue secured a coveted spot as a finalist in the prestigious Dobell Drawing Prize with a peeling made from fibreglass and resin at the National Art School in Sydney, Australia. Additionally, he achieved the esteemed "Highly Commended" recognition at the Milburn Art Prize for Landscape, hosted by the Brisbane Institute of Art in Brisbane, Australia.

At the heart of Domergue's artistic practice lies his innovative technique, aptly named "Peeling." This method employs thick, malleable pigments in resin, serving both as painting medium and adhesive. Through this process, he physically peels away surface layers of urban landscapes, resulting in almost sculptural surfaces. The culmination of this intricate process yields a striking blend of varied coloured abstract shapes and highly textured surfaces, all skilfully bound together with fiberglass, which serves as his canvas. Christophe Domergue's work transcends the conventional, inviting viewers into a world of texture, colour, and form that engages on a profound level.
