Magnolias are some of the most spectacular flowering trees and Alan has honoured them through this sculpture. He has focused on producing a sculpture that provides an impressive silhouette. This sculpture lends itself to being in a large spice with light coloured walls and can be placed indoors or outdoors.
The main stem of the sculpture comes from a dray in the Margaret River region. This particular dray was used for decades to cart produce around the region. Alan received the components from the famed Knocker who is the local wrecking yard dealer, and he is fast becoming a legend.
Care for sculpture
The steel components have been treated with a coating of rust converter and penetrol. Another option could be linseed oil and turpentine in a 50/50 mixture - lightly brushed on, and then the excess wiped off with a cloth. This coating can be applied as regularly as every 6 months – this is recommended if the piece is outdoors and exposed to the elements. If indoors, the process can be repeated every few years. In addition to linseed oil, any commercially available furniture oil, such as tung oil, can be used for this application. Penetrol is used for outdoor settings and offers higher levels of protection.
