Arctic Tern Frequent Flyer

Arctic Terns are incredible travellers and can migrate up to 80,000 km per year. If you look carefully at the natural design of this bird, you can see why they are so efficient in flight. Alan’s love for seabirds is no secret, and the tern is one of his favourites—these magnificent birds are regular visitors to our coastline.

This piece has been designed to look effortlessly suspended in a moment in time, elevated on a slim metal rod to capture the grace of mid-flight. The body of the bird and the base are both carved from warm, rich avocado wood. The concept behind the base reflects the journey itself: crafted to resemble a lone island, a vital resting place for these birds as they navigate vast distances across the globe.

The sleek wings are hand-cut from repurposed roof flashing sheet metal, continuing Alan’s commitment to using recycled components wherever he can. Every material carries its own story and purpose.

Care for your sculpture:
This is an indoor piece. To keep the wood rich and the metal protected, it will require a light coat of furniture wax or clear shoe polish (gently brushed on and buffed with a soft cloth) every few years.

Key Adjustments Made:
The "Island" Base: Highlighted the symbolic connection between the avocado wood base and the remote islands terns encounter on their long migrations.
Floating/Suspended Look: Incorporated the thin rod mounting into the narrative about flight.
Materials: Updated the body/base to avocado wood and the wings to repurposed roof flashing sheet metal, maintaining the eco-conscious theme. A thin coat of white paint has been applied to enhance the lightness of the piece and keep with the look the thud slick seabird.
