I'm spending some time in Derby at the moment. The town sits on a kind of isthmus, surrounded by vast marshlands that lie dry for much of the month, then flood spectacularly with the huge tides. These wetlands edge onto King Sound and the wide, branching river delta.
The margins of the marsh are lined with old, sculptural boabs, and there are always brolgas foraging around a small wetland nearby, along with a remarkable variety of other birdlife. I spend a lot of time out there in the mornings and again at dusk. The low sun—or the sinking moon—casts a light that transforms the whole landscape.
And I always seem to find the brolgas.
