About the artist

Judy's artistic career began at the age of six, when she spent afternoons after school drawing pictures in chalk on the blackboard of the school where her father was a schoolteacher. Encouraged to draw, she filled sketch books throughout her childhood and teen years concentrating on animals and especially horses.

Judy studied art for three years and attained a Diploma in Fine Art at the Claremont School of Art, prior to heading north to the Kimberley in 1978 and on to Kakadu National Park in the Northern Territory. The north of Australia provided Judy with the inspiration and passion to paint wetlands, rivers and billabongs full of crocodiles, water birds and wildlife, and a vast and changing pristine landscape. Judy has travelled extensively across the country spending time in the North West, Arnhem Land and Queensland.

Her great respect for the aboriginal people, and their spiritual connection to the land, has given Judy a direction that has evolved into a distinctive approach to painting them. Her watercolours often depict figures dancing freely in the Australian landscape, along with brolgas, dingoes and other animals. With the spectacular colours of the Kimberley to inspire her, Judy loves to paint the mangroves and tidal creeks, the red dirt of the desert, and the turquoise seas that kiss the white sands of the Kimberley coastline. She prefers to work in watercolour and gouache, but also paints in acrylic on canvas.

Judy has pursued her passion for horses and continues to reference them in her diverse compositions capturing the colour, light and vitality of the country she loves.

Judy has gained international acclaim for her paintings and is represented in numerous collections in Australia and internationally.
