Collection: Suzanne Lawson

Suzanne is a Western Australian artist who works primarily in oils.  Her paintings reflect her love of portraiture, still life and florals.  She is inspired by the old masters’ technique of layering paint over a toned ground surface, slowly building up transparent layers, which at times can take weeks to achieve.

Suzanne was drawn to painting and creativity as a child, however moved onto many different things before returning back to painting later in life.  She now works from her home studio in East Fremantle.

Over the years Suzanne has worked and trained with many well renowned artists and mentors, and recognises the wealth of information and generosity these artists have given her.

Her portraiture style brings an intimacy to her subjects and elicits the essence of the sitter, whilst maintaining her artistic voice.

Suzanne’s style is considered contemporary ‘painterly’ realism, with a focus on light and form.  Whilst balancing portraiture and still life, she seeks through painting to capture a moment in time, to depict the joy and challenges we may face and to show beauty in everyday things.

Among other exhibitions and awards Suzanne has taken part in, she has been fortunate to have been selected as a semi-finalist in the prestigious Doug Moran National Portrait Prize in 2021 with her work ‘Rachel in the Blue Light’.
