Roslyn Hamdorf & Toni Salmon: Landscape, Form and Texture
Share
Yallingup Galleries is pleased to present a new exhibition bringing together the work of Dunsborough artists Roslyn Hamdorf and Toni Salmon.
Through painting and ceramics, the exhibition explores the artists’ shared interest in form, texture, balance and the natural environment. While Roslyn interprets the West Australian landscape through richly layered oil paintings, Toni creates hand-built ceramic sculptures with organic forms and earthy surfaces.
Roslyn’s latest body of work, Remains, reflects a year of travels through the Pilbara, Kimberley, Kati Thandi, Painted Desert and Naturaliste. Her paintings distil the landscape into its essential elements, exploring rocks, grains of sand, shifting surfaces and weathered formations.
“A slow process of letting go of all the fine detail and noise, keeping only what is necessary,” Roslyn says. “What remains is evidence of another time, another landscape, another story.”
Balance, tension and erosion recur throughout her work. Working in oils on canvas or board, Roslyn builds and removes layers of paint with a spatula, creating textured surfaces that evoke the landscapes she has encountered.
Working in small batches allows Toni to approach every piece individually. Each work is unique and carefully made, celebrating handmade craftsmanship and encouraging a more mindful and meaningful connection with the objects around us.
Together, Roslyn and Toni’s works offer two complementary responses to the West Australian environment. Their paintings and sculptures reveal a shared sensitivity to material, surface and the natural forces that shape the landscape.
