Yallingup Galleries is proud to present a solo exhibition by South West Australian abstract artist Josh Windram. Opening in Yallingup on Saturday 12 September 2026, the exhibition features a new collection of expressive Australian landscape paintings inspired by the colour, light and vastness of Western Australia.
Based in West Australia’s South West, Josh creates expressive abstract paintings inspired by the colour, light and vastness of the Australian landscape. Shifting skies, sunlight striking rock formations, storm clouds moving across the bay and the feeling of standing in an endless remote landscape all find their way into his work.
Rather than interpreting a particular place literally, Josh paints intuitively and allows each piece to evolve through instinct, emotion and reaction.
“My inspiration comes from many things, like looking up at the sky and watching it shift in colour and light, the way the sun hits a rock formation, watching storm clouds roll in over the bay or being in the middle of nowhere and just feeling endless space,” Josh explains.
“When I paint, I like to lose myself in the work, abstracting the elements to create my own world.”
A life shaped by art and recovery
Josh has been surrounded by art for much of his life. As a master picture framer in his family’s business, Windram Art, he developed a close understanding of artworks and their presentation before emerging as an artist in his own right.
His creative journey is also inseparable from a powerful personal story of recovery and renewal. After struggling with substance dependence from an early age, Josh became disconnected from his family and friends and eventually experienced homelessness.
In 2016, he reconnected with his parents and, with their support, entered a rehabilitation program through Fresh Start. During his recovery, Josh spent time working with a professional artist and discovered the restorative role creativity could play in his life.
He initially began studying art therapy with the hope of helping others through recovery. During his studies, however, he realised that he wanted to dedicate his own life to making art.
Shortly after leaving Fresh Start, Josh reconnected with a childhood friend who would become his partner. Together they moved to the South West to begin a new chapter. From his home studio, surrounded by the region’s coastline, dramatic skies and expansive landscapes, Josh began developing his Australian abstract paintings.
His forthcoming exhibition at Yallingup Galleries presents a personal and emotive interpretation of the Australian landscape, reflecting both the environment around him and the journey that brought him to it.
