About the artist
Born in 1964, Douglas grew up in an artistic family in the Darlington Hills in Western Australia surrounded by trees and the vibrant hills art community. Douglas spent his early years painting at every opportunity with informal training from his parents, both prominent local artists. At just nineteen he held his first solo exhibition.
After extensive travels throughout Asia his work became increasingly influenced by the orient, in particular Chinese and Japanese art. Painting in a semi abstract style, birds and still life are favourite subjects with special interest in wrens and Chinese vases. Gold leaf features heavily in Douglas’ work and he ensures he uses only the finest quality gold leaf and paints. Sixteenth century gilding techniques are used to apply the gold. Many of Douglas’ works are completed over a period of months, sometimes years as they are worked and reworked until he is completely satisfied with the piece. Most of his paintings are then framed in hand finished frames made by Douglas and fitted with ultra violet protective glazing to ensure the longevity of the artwork.
