About the artist

Born in Perth 1948, Rob was the first owner and curator of Yallingup Galleries and is an artisan in his own right, crafting some of WA’s most beautiful hardwood furniture. Renowned for his furniture designs in local and unique timbers Rob continues to push the boundaries, incorporating his artwork to his custom designed pieces.

Rob’s passion for art was ignited early in his life under the profound and positive influence of landscape artist and teacher Robert Juniper. After completing tertiary studies in Fine Art Rob went on to follow his mentor by teaching art at Scotch College, Perth.  Moving to the coastal town of Yallingup in 1975 Rob commenced successfully working with timber under the profile of Design Wood.

In 1986 his vision to profile and promote the arts further lead to him designing, building and opening Yallingup Galleries in a natural bush setting at the gateway to the Margaret River wine region. The gallery represents over two hundred predominantly Western Australian artists and displays a diverse range of fine arts and furniture. Seeking to expand the space to cater for solo exhibitions, workshops and artists in residence, Rob designed and built the Garden Art Studio in 1996. Over a thirty-year period, he has been the curator and director of an extensive number of professional, contemporary, large - scale public exhibitions.

Rob has had a significant influence within the Western Australian artistic community whilst maintaining his own passion for creating unique individual pieces of art and furniture. His symbolic painting compositions are thought provoking and meaningful, with references to his extensive travels throughout Australia and overseas. Using mixed mediums on board and canvas his artworks are beautifully textured layers of earthy colours capturing his compositions in harmonious balance.

With photography another passion, developed over many years, Rob periodically releases prints on canvas, paper and aluminium.  Travelling to isolated and pristine regions he captures his unique experiences, sharing his connection to the land and the people, whilst preserving on film places that may be lost for future generations to view.
